Blankets mean different things to different people. For some, a blanket is something that keeps them warm. For others, a blanket is a fashionable accent. Still others, view a blanket as a security item. And then there are those people who think a blanket is just another piece of fabric. I believe that I am in the middle of those first three. I love a nice warm blanket on a chilly winter night. Being snuggled under a soft blanket just makes me feel warm inside and out. I also love a bright blanket thrown on a big chair. There’s just something about a blanket that says “Come. Sit. Relax.” And I do honestly believe that blankets contribute to feelings of security. I absolutely cannot sleep unless I am covered by a blanket. I will also be the first to admit that this is more than likely psychological. Somehow we believe that the murder will not hurt us if only we are under a blanket. Why? Who on earth knows! We just do.
In addition to being warm, fashionable, secure, and fabric…blankets are also, I believe, very personal. For whatever reason, when I go over to a friend’s apartment and curl up on their sofa with one of their blankets, it’s just not near as comforting. Blankets become like our friends over time. Think about it. What do you do with a blanket? You read with it, watch movies with it, drink with it, eat with it, cry on it, sleep with it…(o.O) You get the point. Suffice it to say, you spend a lot of life time with your blanket. A blanket that belongs to someone else, a blanket that has their tears and chocolate stains on it, now to you that is just another piece of fabric.
On the other hand, blankets can be an awesome way of showing how well you know someone. For example, my best friend would not buy me a hot pink blanket with purple fuzzy tassels. At lease she wouldn’t if she wanted to remain my friend. Why? Because she knows me! She knows that that kind of blanket would absolutely not be comforting to me under ANY circumstances. However, because she does know me, she might buy me a blanket with the New York Yankees logo on it. (I am aware that I may lose some followers over that last sentence…) In any case, I’ve made my point. A blanket can be a great gift between really great friends who know each other extremely well.
So thank you for reading this post, now go curl up under your favorite blanket and listen to the latest Mumford album!
Enjoy!
